Which Online Niche is Best For You?
By Jeremy Franklin

The success of any online business depends on finding your niche. The choice of a good niche not only guarantees search engine traffic, but also fetches good revenues from the website. However, first and foremost, the niche has to be discovered. Here are some suggestions to help you in this regard:

1. Prepare a list of subjects that interest you. In case your online venture is a roaring success, you will have to busy yourself in interacting with your clients about your business either online or offline. So you should choose a subject you have an interest in so that you never feel tired of handling it on a regular basis.

2. Once you have the list, explore the demand for the topics in the market. A thorough keyword research will yield this kind of information. There are a lot of tools to help you in this regard, like the Google AdWords tool and Wordtracker. In your quest for finding your niche, you can check which of your topics are in demand among consumers and how many businesses are currently providing services on these topics. Your interest should lie with topics having high demand, but with very few businesses in the market to meet the demand, i.e., topics people want to know more about, but which have few websites to provide information on them. Once in a while you may also find a topic that has been left untouched by all online entrepreneurs. Such topics must be considered carefully as they may not be profitable commercially. A common feature of every keyword tool is its indicator that tells you how many people are looking for a topic and the number of websites there are on the internet to cater to people's need for information or service on that topic. For example, you may find 1000 people wanting to know about gingerbread cookies, yet there are only 20 pages optimized for the keyword. You can think of exploring such lucrative niches.

3. You should research and explore the sites of your competitors to know what the niche market is like. Different keyword tools will help you in this regard. For example, you may visit websites optimized for gingerbread cookies and find that only five of them deal with popular cookie recipes. The others may be sites devoted to health issues related to eating cookies, or types of gingerbread cookie containers, etc. So you have only five companies to compete with, and can even have the scope to further narrow your niche. Finally you may decide to create a website devoted exclusively to cookie cutters, if you find that there is a large market for them that has been left untapped.

4. Lastly, you have to find out the commercially viable topics from your list. If we take the cookie example, then you have to know how much money you can make by selling cookie cutters. If you find that Italian espresso machines and coffee grinders are more popular than cookie cutters, then you may want to shift your focus accordingly.

Selecting your online niche is a task that requires perseverance. A topic that satisfies all aspects may be hard to come up with, so you need to devote considerable time to finding one, and the time you invest will be worth it. To increase the likelihood of your topic clicking among online consumers you should make sure that you put in extensive research when finding your niche.
